Welcome to the site of the Lytham St Annes Mens Bowling League. Established in 1927, the League has been a nursery for many bowlers who have achieved wider fame. Names such as Ted Jackson, Mike Leach and, more recently, Paul Wilson, first nurtured their skills within our bosom.

Situated on the Fylde coast, close to the “Wembley” of Crown Green Bowling, the League is made up of fifteen participating clubs, fielding some 52 teams within our structure. Overall, some 750 local bowlers enjoy both the social and competitive aspects of our League throughout the summer months.

There are four Divisions, two of whom each play in the separate Evening and Veterans Leagues. At present, the Evening Leagues house 12 teams, whereas the longer afternoon hours allow 14 teams to compete in each Division of the Veterans League. The Evening matches take place on either a Monday or Friday night, whilst the Vets tranquilly pass their retirement hours on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon.

In addition to League bowling, we also run five knockout competitions, catering for both singles and doubles play, throughout the season. The main one of these is the scratch based “Lytham St Annes Express Trophy”. Handicap players are catered for in two other singles tourneys. The “Mayors Trophy”, the oldest competition in our history and from which the original concept of our League was spawned. The second handicap event, “The Cheerful Sparrows” Trophy, demonstrates also our support for local charity. Vital funds are raised towards the Ormerod Home Trust Ltd, by the work of the Marine Park BC and the players who enter into the tournament.

The Veterans have their own singles tournament in the “Peter Watson” Trophy; presented by Mrs Joan Watson, in memoriam of one of our former players. Finally, bowler of all climes

compete together in the “BCM Doubles” Trophy. A tournament  which is generously sponsored each year by one of our major local companies, the Berkeley Care Homes Management Group.

At the end of the season, we combine our talents with those of our local Ladies League, in a Mixed Pairs competition for the “Age Concern”  Trophy. The history of all these competitions, together with more information regarding the 2008 events, can be accessed in our competition archives “The Knife Edge”.

With all this activity, our season commences at the end of March and continues through until the middle of September. In addition to our website, our League Results and tables are also published in our local media, the Blackpool Evening Gazette and its weekly sister paper, the Lytham St Annes Express.

For general information about our various League Clubs, their venues and contacts within the clubs, please contact either our League General or Match Secretary. The details of both these officials can be seen on the “Judge and Jury” section home page. Alternatively, we are trying to develop an individual identity for each of our clubs within the “Club Paparazzi section. Eventually, maps to the venues and details of the Secretaries and Team captains will be outlined here.

Please take your time to browse our pages; we hope that they will provide food for thought for both our local stalwarts and visitors alike. If you have any comments, or wish to contribute any material to our site, please email us at geoff.worden@02.co.uk . Examples could include links to your own League or Club sites, which may be of especial interest to any of our bowlers who may have moved to this area, or settled here in retirement and wish to continue to access information from their original abode.
